Mount Waverley ANZAC Centenary Walkway

In 2014, the Rotary Club of Mount Waverley officially opened the Mount Waverley ANZAC Centenary Walkway. The memorial walkway is a major project initiated by our Club.

Located at the Mount Waverley Community Centre, it is a place of reflection set within a picturesque garden. The Walkway commemorates each year of World War One, with information plaques along the walkway. It’s both a commemorative and educational space.

Sponsored by the Australian Government’s Australian Centenary Public Grants Program and supported by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, the Walkway recognises the importance of acknowledging the fallen and ensuring we commemorate the sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand military personnel who have died during war. With support from the City of Monash, the initial design for the walkway was by our member engineer Paul Power.

The Mount Waverley ANZAC Centenary Walkway provides a permanent place for our local community to acknowledge the bravery of the Anzacs.

ANZAC DAY 2021

We Will Remember Them

On the crisp, chilly Melbourne morning of Wednesday 28th April of this year, our Club gathered with staff and students from Mount Waverley Secondary College at the Mount Waverley ANZAC Centenary Walkway at the Community Centre in Mount Waverley to commemorate our ANZACS.  This was the first time the Walkway has been used to host a local ANZAC Commemoration.

The commemoration commenced with guest piper Ian McMillan playing his bagpipes and moving down through the five archways representing each year of World War I, lined with students, teachers and Rotarians. Following an introduction by the Rotary Club President, one of the Rotarians gave a short address with an emphasis on the ANZAC spirit and Community service. Also present was Gladys Liu, the Federal Member for Chisholm and a member of our club, who engaged with the students and teachers after the ceremony.

Mak’s Quality Spit Roast Catering supplied a wonderful breakfast.

Appreciation was given by those who attended this first and certainly not the last ANZAC Commemoration at the Mount Waverley ANZAC Centenary Walkway.

Teachers and students have discovered this gem and will be including it as an educational resource in their WWI curriculum.

‘They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.’
