Education opportunities

Developing the next generation of leaders

Mount Waverley Rotary is involved in a number of youth programs to support young people in our community. We partner with local primary and secondary schools in order to provide additional opportunities to support and supplement the programs provided within schools. The aims of these programs is to improve student’s personal development, grow their education, teach them about community service, encourage them to participate in rewarding competitions, and to participate in initiatives to improve international their understanding.

Our Club supports:

Interact

Interact brings students together to develop leadership skills while discovering the power of Service Above Self.

As part of its Student Voice and Leadership Program, we work with Mount Waverley Secondary College to help with the running of their Interact Club at their junior campus.

The club helps students to connect with leaders in the Mount Waverley community, take action to make a difference and become a leader in their school community, all while having fun and making new friends. The club organises at least two projects every year, one that helps the school or community and one that promotes international understanding. Mount Waverley Rotary sponsors mentors and guides Interactors as they carry out projects.

4-WAY-TEST PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

The program promotes public speaking in a competition for Year 10 students in District 9810 on the topic of Rotary’s Four Way Test, supported by sponsoring Rotary Clubs working in partnership with their local schools and Toastmasters International.  Mount Waverley Rotary supports students from Avila College and Mount Waverley Secondary College.

Benefits to participating students include exposure to the ideals and ethical values of Rotary, proficiency in the art of public speaking and confidence and self-esteem gained from  presenting to large audiences.

The speech competition is based on the theme of the Rotary Four-Way Test:
“Of the things we think, say or do

  • Is it the TRUTH?

  • Is it FAIR to all concerned?

  • Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

  • Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?”

m.u.n.a. - model united nations assembly

Our Rotary District 9810 runs M.U.N.A for year eleven students. This two day program simulates sessions of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) and is held at Parliament House Victoria. We sponsor students from Avila College and Mount Waverley Secondary College to attend.

M.U.N.A encourages young people to learn about other countries and appreciate the workings of the UN. A team of two students is allocated a member country of the UN. They are required to investigate that country and represent its views as they debate a range of selected resolutions.

The program provides participants with the opportunity to learn about other countries and their perspectives on international issues, develop debating and public speaking skills, develop “listen & responding” (thinking on your feet) skills, as well as improving commitment to and planning for deadlines – balancing responsibilities.

We support students from Avila College and Mount Waverley Secondary College to participate in the program.

RYLA - Rotary Youth Leadership AWARD

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a global leadership experience for young people between the ages of 14-30, offering young leaders the opportunity to develop leadership skills while having fun and making connections. The initiative helps connect emerging leaders to their community and to other emerging leaders around the world.
